Highlights We examine the fluvial landscape in medieval Welsh poetry. We analyse the poetry of Guto'r Glyn (fl. c–) in this context. Guto'r Glyn's elegiac poetry displays innovative use of rivers and floods. A well-known satire on Guto'r Glyn is shown to be a form of literary criticism. Rivers were sites of dynamic creativity and occupied complex cultural roles.   Peter Geoghegan is investigations editor at openDemocracy and the author of “Democracy for Sale: Dark Money and Dirty Politics” (August , Head of Zeus). LONDON — Scandals about money in British politics are like London buses: You wait an age expecting one to turn up, then a slew arrive all at once.
